Scientific Abstract Competition

Abstracts will be presented to a national audience at SHM Converge and published in an online supplement of the Journal of Hospital Medicine. Many of the cutting-edge abstracts that are presented are also later published in leading medical journals in the field.

Converge 2025's Educational Tracks

This combined track is for hospitalists who practice in academic medical centers, as well as for hospitalists in any setting interested in research. Every hospitalist, whether in a community or academic medical setting, who desires to bring greater rigor to their analysis as well as educational effectiveness will walk away from these sessions with new tools to implement.
This track is geared towards Hospitalists with an interest in improving organizational healthcare value via the reduction of costs. From removing low-value-care practices to shared QI initiatives impacting cost-reduction measures, these sessions aim to help hospitalists streamline wasteful practices in their practice, their groups, and their facilities.
Expert clinicians and educators deliver evidence-based updates from the literature in topic areas relevant to hospitalists.
This track provides information about the cognitive process used by clinicians to assess, diagnose and treat patients.
These sessions will address healthcare disparities and provide tools and strategies to foster an inclusive and equitable workplace.
The Early Career Hospitalist track is designed for new hospitalists, resident physicians and medical students interested in pursuing a career in Hospital Medicine. Designed by SHM’s physicians-in-training committee, which includes nationally recognized hospitalists with expertise in scholarship, career development, and medical education, this track aims to inspire future hospitalist leaders.

These sessions will focus on health policy development and implementation, with highlights of federal legislative and regulatory programs and processes that impact hospital medicine.

Content in this track features sessions on current and future technologies and tools that impact care delivery, practice efficiency, and provider and patient experience.

For those who are current or aspiring leaders this track focuses on topics related to the unique aspects of leading in the hospital. These talks are full of practical tips to boost your leadership acumen.

Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants are critical to hospital medicine care delivery. This half-day track will discuss best practices in NP/PA utilization and collaboration.

Hospitalists are optimally situated to provide palliative care to their patients. This track gives you tools to optimize your care of patients who would benefit from palliative care during or following their hospitalization.

Patients and their support systems are an important part of our care teams. This track provides strategies to improve the experience of patients/caregivers and communicate effectively across the care team.

The Pediatric track offers a variety of clinical and systems-based topics. This track will feature sessions including clinical topics as well as things we do for no reason, pediatric style, and updates in topics important to those caring for children.

These sessions provide learners with evidence-based practices in medical management before and after surgery, including preoperative risk assessment and optimization, intraoperative issues that impact medical conditions, and postoperative management strategies, delivered by experts in perioperative medicine.

Hospitalists are increasingly involved in patient care outside of the hospital. These sessions will provide attendees with information on how to implement and sustain successful programs for patient care outside of the hospital.

The importance of organizational infrastructure related to the practice of hospital medicine is well recognized, and information in this area continues to accumulate. Join these sessions to learn more about optimizing your hospital medicine group’s practice.

Given the importance of quality and patient safety in the delivery of healthcare, the Quality Track is offered to address the imperatives around development and implementation of improvement efforts in the hospital.

These sessions provide attendees with skills and perspectives to foster resilience, identify and mitigate burnout, and promote sustainability in practice and in life.

Featuring something for everyone, these are extended length sessions (90 minutes) held in smaller round-table settings for attendees to engage in a more interactive learning environment.
